Gmail is making it so much simpler for business owners to send encrypted messages to any inbox of their choice.
The latest feature is under development right now and is designed to present a new encryption model that works with a few clicks. It’s quite different from the current encryption offering for Gmail. It does not need senders or recipients to utilize any customized software or exchange certificates for things like encryption.
The feature is launching today and will be up for grabs to Google Enterprise users soon, provided the beta goes well. Google shared how it plans to expand emails presented to Gmail inboxes in the next couple of weeks. It’s also going out to inboxes from any third-party email provider later on this year.
Right now, the current encryption offering has to do with the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions protocol. So it can send external emails. However, doing so requires recipients to have their S/MIME configuration completed through several steps with senders before emails get exchanged securely.
The latest process will give Gmail users the chance to toggle on more encryption inside email drafts to provide encryption. Those without the configuration are given links to sign in as a guest to view safely and provide a reply to emails in the restricted version of Gmail.
In case the recipient has the configuration completed, Gmail sends messages through that process. Also, Gmail for both personal and business accounts gets decrypted automatically inside the recipient’s inbox.
Such encryption through the latest system is higher than the usual Transport Layer Security used by Gmail on emails through default settings. We need to mention how this right now isn’t actually E2EE, despite what Google might think. The latest capability is powered using encryption from the client’s side. It provides workspace administrators full power over encryption keys. So this means they have the power to revoke the users’ access and monitor any kind of encrypted files as per the company’s help page.
