Canada Vows to Review and Cancel Government Starlink Accounts Amid US Trade War

Canada wants the world to know that it’s not sitting back and watching Donald Trump engage in trade wars silently.

The country has made it clear that it would be retaliating with full force against SpaceX’s Starlink. This includes reviewing and canceling government accounts amid the growing trade war tension. Any account that it feels isn’t needed for business continuity or emergency replies would be a part of this.

We’ve seen Trump’s auto tariffs come into play recently, targeting all vehicles imported from Canada. As per Prime Minister Mark Carney, the retaliatory taxes against America are now targeting one of Trump’s leading allies, Elon Musk. He’s the CEO for Tesla and SpaceX, so all of this does make sense.

Yukon shared how they plan to end rebates for Musk’s products that were on offer via the Good Energy Program that markets the trading of electric vehicles. Today, the government serves 46k individuals. Therefore, it’s making plans to transfer digital products far from X.

Remember, Canada does not plan on stopping there just yet. It hopes to explore more replies that could come into play if Trump’s administration keeps threatening its economy. The taxes rolled out by the administration might violate different trade contracts and also make the lives of Americans so much more difficult with inflation.

Canada also says that it would be a threat to generations-long partnerships between two countries that were once deemed friendly. The country has been clear since day one about how its Ontario province eliminated a $100M CAD contract with Starlink in reply to Trump’s tariffs. Therefore, we can see how this trade war between both sides is giving rise to greater calls among Canadians to get rid of Starlink. It might even intimidate some installers working independently, as it gives rise to intimidation and online insults.

Still, the nation won’t quit Starlink as a whole. Musk’s company is great in terms of providing top-quality service at incredible speeds to various remote and rural places. As shared on Thursday, the government even made it clear how local residents as well as the government could use satellite communications more than others, especially in emergency scenarios where this comes in handy.

The government of Quebec shared how it was rolling out a new contract to Starlink to make the most of these internet services for remote locations. There’s no satisfactory replacement for Starlink right now, as declared by Quebec’s Justice Department.

The government, however, does hope its plans for retaliation to US trade wars prove to be fruitful, despite all the pushback it’s faced. Some citizens are calling it a stupid move as they spent millions of tax dollars on various Starlinks to stop utilizing them. So as you can tell, there is great skepticism about Canada’s response to Trump’s tariffs.
