TikTok Leads Revenue and Downloads Despite US Ban Concerns, ChatGPT Surges, DeepSeek Joins Top Ten

According to Appfigures data, TikTok was the highest-earning mobile app in the world despite it ban or sale drama in the US in the same month. The US is the second biggest source of revenue for TikTok after China so it facing the axe but still pulling up numbers is really impressive. Even though TikTok was the highest-earning mobile app, its global net revenue still declined 67% and reached revenue of $200 million after seeing its highest peak in December 2024. This means that TikTok creators lost $50 million and that is the amount some apps make in a year.

YouTube was the second highest earning app with $150 million revenue, followed by Disney+ with $123 million revenue. These are the revenues companies get to keep after paying their fees to Google Play and App Store. The other top five highest earning apps were Tinder ($103 million) and Max ($93 million). The top five highest earning apps globally in February are the same as they were in December. In the top ten, Duolingo and Tencent Video got out and were replaced by LinkedIn and Peacock. The top ten highest earning apps earned $966 million collectively in Google Play and App Store in February 2025.

Looking at most downloaded apps in February 2025, TikTok remains the most downloaded app with 42 million downloads. The forced-sale of TikTok in US didn't affect its downloads much because the country is a big source of revenue from TikTok and not downloads. Instagram is the second most downloaded app globally with 42 million downloads followed by OpenAI's ChatGPT with 36 million downloads. ChatGPT pushed Facebook and WhatsApp down to get on the third spot.

DeepSeek was the tenth most downloaded app in February 2025 with 20 million downloads. DeepSeek soon rose to popularity even though it is not possible for apps to soon break through the top ten chart. Now the hype for DeepSeek has died down a little but it is still getting 300k downloads every day. The top ten most downloaded apps made it into 299 million phones in February 2025.
