SEO Job Market Shifts: Listings Decline, Leadership Roles Surge, and AI Skills Drive High Salaries

According to the 2025 Previsible State of SEO Jobs Report, there has been a 34% decline in SEO role listings and a 28% decline in SEO content job listings. On the other hand, there was a 50% increase in leadership roles in SEO like vice president positions while there was a 58% increase in manager roles in SEO. This data seems important because it shows that companies are looking to hire SEO professionals who are skilled in AI, strategic, and technical fields. Even though the roles that are based on content are now being done with the help of AI, technical and leadership skills are still in high demand.

The report also found that 90% of all SEO positions come from companies with more than 250 employees, while remote jobs made up 50% of the SEO job positions in early 2024 but now have dropped to 34%. In 2024, a salary of over $100,000 was being offered by 12% of the SEO listings while 40% of the companies were offering salaries higher than that as compared to 14% of the agencies. For a vice president in an SEO position, the average salary being offered is $191,850 while the average salary for a director or SEO is $141,178. The average salary for a technical SEO position is $97,500, $80,800 for an SEO manager, and $67,500 for content SEO.

The report showed that the average salary is $82,000, which declined from $90,000 in Q1 to $75,000 in Q4. The most in-demand SEO skills are content marketing, technical SEO, and data analytics. 56% of the job descriptions offering a $250,000 to $300,000 salary mentioned AI, which shows that many companies are also looking for AI skills.
