Sam Altman’s Bold Warning: Learn AI or Get Left Behind in Tech’s Biggest Shift

CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, says that students should learn and master AI tools because the workforce is quickly automating coding. In an interview with Stratechery’s Ben Thompson, Sam Altman said that today's AI skills are comparable to coding skills during his own high school years. He said that when he was in school, coding was a tactical thing and now being good at using AI tools has become the newer version of that. Now many tech executives are also using AI tools for coding.

The CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, says that AI is going to write 90% of the code within the next six months and will be able to write nearly all code in a year. OpenAI’s chief product officer also predicts that AI is going to surpass human coding capabilities by the end of this year. As the talks about AI replacing software engineers are increasing, Sam Altman says that AI tools are a key to future-proofing your career, especially with the rise of vibe code.

He added that AI is already handling 50% of the tasks in many companies but the real breakthrough will happen with agentic coding. Altman said that agentic coding is being delayed because of model problems and it will take some more time to evolve. He advised the students to focus on adaptability, resilience, and ability to learn rather than just mastering their specific skills. Even though software engineers are still in demand, AI is going to reduce the need for them. It may not happen quickly but many engineers are going to rely on AI tools for productivity.
