Google Gemini just rolled out a much needed update for iPhone users. The feature is now easily accessible through the device’s lock screen, starting today.
The news comes to us thanks to tech news outlet 9to5Google, which shared the feature. This means users can make calls to Gemini Live, Google’s real-time voice assistant. So basically you benefit from the popular AI chatbot having the voice feature without the need to unlock your device.
It’s great to see how it managed to beat out Apple’s own Siri voice assistant, which will be coming out with that offering by early 2027, due to extreme delays in the rollout. But it seems like there’s plenty of competition in the AI space to give iPhone users exactly what they want through other AI assistants.
The feature will provide users with Apple phones the chance to see how diverse LLMs are as the company’s own LLM based Siri is miles away from a launch. Still, many do anticipate it and look forward to see what Apple has to offer despite rivals heating up the competition.
ChatGPT’s iOS platform enables users to make calls to OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode through the lock screen.
Meanwhile, Gemini Live isn’t the only thing that the Gemini app is turning heads with. We’re also seeing a host of other lock screen widgets such as those designed to take images using the phone’s camera and then transferring the uploads to Gemini. Then there is a feature for reminder settings and other important calendar events. Another feature allows users to jump straight into text chats through Gemini.
Google also shared that it would enable Gemini users across Android to request the AI chatbot for any queries about what’s seen on the screen or for videos while getting replies in real time. Such offerings were initially shared as part of the Project Astra. The latter is the Android maker’s multimodal AI initiative that’s slowly arriving on the Gemini platform. To begin with, the offerings are up for grabs for subscribers on Google Gemini’s Advanced plan, that’s for a monthly cost of $20.
So as you can see, Google is really making headway in the world of AI, not only for Android but also Apple devices.
