Meta’s AI Chatbot Finally Launches in the EU This Week After Serious Privacy Concerns

It’s a big win for Meta and one that has come with plenty of struggles but we’re going to see the company’s AI chatbot launch across the EU this week.

The offering would be up for grabs on apps like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. However, we can confirm that the leading feature of Ray-Ban smart glasses is still being withheld due to privacy issues.

The company’s innovative generative AI offering was first shared in America in 2023. However, many knew that privacy concerns would lead to a setback for a release in the EU. A lot of this had to do with the way it was being trained on different posts on Instagram and Facebook since 2007.

As per EU laws, it needed to give users the option to opt-out if they were not willing. But privacy regulators weren’t too happy about this. Many argued that they should instead opt in. This saw the tech giant put a pause on the rollout in Europe. With time, the expansion program went on in different regions of the world.

The launch continues to resume after Meta described it as the most intensive form of engagement with regulators. As shared by The Verge, text chat would be up for grabs at the moment.

Beginning this week, Meta AI will launch across all leading apps including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. This means 41 nations in Europe and 21 more globally.

For now, Meta says the AI assistant will only work like a chatbot for users in the EU. It will assist in brainstorming ideas, planning trips, and providing replies to certain queries using data online. EU users can use Meta AI to display various types of content on Instagram feeds. But they won’t be able to use it for producing images editing content, or requesting details about images. Similarly, the model isn’t trained on any data belonging to EU users either.

This will seriously impact the Ray-Ban Meta product which cannot offer headline features of allowing users to ask AI about anything. This includes what they might be seeing at that moment in time or any other query that comes across their minds at that moment in time.
