Tech giant Google just shared some great news that many developers have been anticipating for a while now. The company confirmed the news that it’s giving developers the chance to select the right billing system as per their needs for the apps on Google Play.
The new change will impact clients based in the United Kingdom, but it’s also rolled out similar changes for others in different parts of the world. Right now, the latest billion option is up for grabs to non-game developers, starting today.
Any developer opting in can provide its users the chance for separate billing payments, but cannot remove the billing system at Google Play as a whole. When or if a user opts to make use of alternative billing systems, developers can avoid the 30% fee mark seen for transactions that Google gets.
However, please don’t assume the chance is a voluntary one. It comes after the country’s Competition and Markets Authority or CMA rolled out an investigation against the Android maker and Apple in 2022. They found that both tech giants could be taking part in antitrust actions. This includes limiting users’ decisions and developers’ selections by not enabling billing by third parties.
Google also agreed to provide an alternative billing system, so the investigation is closed for now, leading to the decision announced today.
