According to Flashpoint’s Global Threat Intelligence Report, about 3.2 billion credentials were compromised in 2024 which is a 33% increase from last year. 75% of those stolen credentials were from infostealer malware which infected over 23 million devices worldwide. Redline was the most prolific infostealer which infected over 9.9 million devices in 2024. The report also found that there was a 10% increase in ransomware attacks across all sectors in 2024. This was an 84% increase from 2023 which shows that 224 was the worst year for ransomware.
When infostealer and ransomware groups are disrupted, the market rebuilds quickly as new malware strains and groups emerge which shows a highly resilient and adaptable cyber threat landscape. This creates major threats and challenges for law enforcement and security teams so threat monitoring and adaptability are important for cybersecurity now.
Another key stat from the report shows that there is a huge rise in data breach attacks with 6670 publicly reported incidents in 2024. These attacks exposed over 16.8 billion records and put many users, organizations, and customers at risk. The VP of Intelligence at Flashpoint, Ian Gray, says that this is an interesting time to live because technology is both a blessing and a curse right now. We need to implement stronger defenses to tackle these advanced cyber attacks.
