A new study by the UK Higher Education Policy Institute is shedding light on the role of AI in today’s generation and how nearly all undergraduates are using AI in some form.
The latest report found that more than 92% of children made use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT for study purposes while 88% of them used it for matters like exams.
The figures are a major rise from the report published in February by HEPI that claimed only 66% and 53% of those participating in the study spoke about AI use. So as you can see, the change is drastic.
The topmost reasons why people spoke about incorporating AI into their daily lives were to save time, better work quality, and attain instant support. Those who were more financially stable and belonged to the male gender were more often said to be using AI as per the survey.
The main arguments against why AI shouldn’t be used were being labeled as cheaters or given false report cards with fake results, while some spoke about biased results as well being a serious issue. The study included both UK-based and international students during December 2024.
Universities appeared to score well with students in terms of AI policies. More than 75% of the replies had students outlining how their school’s AI policy had a clear-cut view on using the tech and that 76% were sure that they could identify AI use through modern checkers. These are commonly employed to assess assignments and exam papers. That’s interesting as more than 88% admitted to using it, despite knowing the dangers.
Also, staff were better equipped to assist, thanks to AI and 42% of all students gave replies to staff performing better than the 18% reported last year.
