Five Billion Accounts Breached, Cybercrime Hits Unprecedented Global Scale

According to Surfshark, a cybersecurity firm, breaches of accounts saw an increase in number in 2024 and most of the data breaches were from three main countries. The report from Surfshark highlights that five billion accounts got breached in 2024 as compared to 730 million in 2023, with nearly 180 accounts being compromised per second. This is an alarming situation but most of the accounts which got breached were all due to one single attack that collected about three billion email addresses. The firm also found that most of the breached accounts were Russian (790 million), followed by American (310 million) and Chinese (160 million). Some other accounts that got breached were German (110 million) and French (100 million).

The firm says that this many accounts getting leaked gives a path for cybercriminals and scammers to target people. But one of the hackers said that they found all the information publicly and none of it was leaked privately. In February 2024, another major attack came from DemandScience and affected 120 million people. Surfshark said that DemandScience is a B2B demand generation company and this kind of information is important for them so they can make targeted marketing campaigns after looking at consumer profiles. 33 million of the accounts that got breached due to this attack were America, 2.4 million of them were British and 1.4 million of them were Canadian.

46% of the data breach accounts were from Russia, China and the US. In 2023, China was at 12th spot but now it got to the top spot. On the other hand, Russia and the US got 80% of the data breaches in 2023. In 2024, 17% of the data breaches accounted to Russia and China with 1700 and 1800 accounts getting breached every minute respectively. 1300 accounts got breached every minute in the US in 2024.

If we look at the breach density by country, Russia topped the list with 6400 accounts getting breached per 1000 people while France came in second spot with 2300 accounts getting breached per 100 people. 70% of people in Europe experienced data breach more than once, followed by Germany, Australia and Netherlands.
