It seems like the list of flagship AI models that keep missing promised launch dates keeps growing as we speak.
This time around we’re talking about Elon Musk’s much talked about and hyped Grok 3 which was called out as xAI’s promising product that could rival OpenAI’s GPT 4o. Despite the launch being promised for 2024’s end, we can confirm that this never happened.
The model was also said to compete with Gemini from Google with innovative features for picture analysis, better replies to queries, and a powerful role in equipping X with more exciting developments. Now, it seems like things have certainly fallen short of the high expectations.
Grok 3 was said to have entered its training phase as confirmed by Musk himself in the mid of 2024. He called it a significant leap ahead while publishing follow-up posts in the middle of last month.
Now, it’s the 1st week of the new year and it seems like Musk and his team have forgotten that it exists with no updates about the rollout. There was even a code spotted across the website that was seen by one AI expert who says that another intermediate model could be coming first called Grok 2.5.
This is not the first time that we’ve seen the tech billionaire share a major goal and miss the plot. His announcements are always larger than life but usually poorly timed or explained. Some would love to call them unrealistic. Still, we do recall him calling the launch in 2024 a lucky probability. But to go completely missing is certainly news that’s slowly turning into a trend.
In the past, major failures for launches did arise with Anthropic and its Claude 3.5 Opus. Despite claims for rolling out in 2024, it was scrapped in its entirety as it was not economical for the firm.
We’ve also witnessed companies like Google and even the makers of ChatGPT suffer similar setbacks in the past in terms of launches for flagship models. This might be a great proof of the drawbacks that come with recent AI scaling rules. This is the way a firm can better its model’s capabilities.
When Musk was asked to shed light on Grok 3 being a state-of-the-art model, he agreed and said that if things go as planned then yes. But he also tried to keep the firm safe by adding that it’s the goal but it could fail.
Now we don’t want to jump to many conclusions. There could be a vast number of reasons for this product’s delay. Remember, xAI has a small team and when you’re competing with industry giants with seamless products, the pressure is huge. Still, we have good hopes for 2025 and maybe later delays could give rise to better products. For now, we’ll just wait and watch for xAI’s next announcement.
