TikTok just shared its ongoing commitment to data and consumer protections in honor of Data Privacy Day.
The social media giant says this is its main focus at the moment and it hopes to reflect more on the key role of privacy in today’s advancing digital world. The day was first launched in 2007 to inspire companies to talk about how their data is handled online. This includes the many options they have to keep their data guarded at all times.
It also had to do with what work was being done by the company behind the scenes for greater privacy and safety measures. Therefore, TikTok sees such a day as one to reaffirm its commitments and share how it continues to work on building more trust with the world.
The matter is awfully interesting considering its timing. Remember, the app has always been on the radar of US lawmakers who called it a serious threat to the country’s national security. Let’s not forget the ban in place which is now temporarily on hold until the company divests 50% of its ownership to an American buyer.
That matter stems from the fact that the platform raised eyebrows for having links to China and sharing users’ personal data with the authorities there. Many called it a surveillance tool for data gathering.
TikTok says that it hopes to better the trust it has with users by rolling out more transparency tools. This includes a privacy center that makes it all the simpler for users to see how information gets used. The app also outlined more about its Transparency Center in place. This is where insights keep getting shared about actions taken on the app. It also highlighted more details about how it ensures data belonging to users based in the US and EU isn’t transferred back to China.
For Europe, the cybersecurity company NCC Group continues to closely monitor functions while in the US, it’s the USDS that helps safeguard users’ data and ensures it stays isolated from any foreign influence. Now the question is if that’s enough for Americans to get the reassurance they need to keep on using the platform.
For now, Donald Trump does seem to be happy with the way it’s working and with so much transparency up for grabs in this new report, we feel it just might find the right compromise to meet any concerns.
