Grok's "Unhinged Mode" Promises Bold Responses but Remains Unavailable

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is getting closer to a feature he teased nearly a year ago: “Unhinged Mode.” Last April, Musk hinted that this mode would push the boundaries, and now xAI, the company behind Grok, has updated its FAQ page to explain what that means.

Unhinged Mode is meant to deliver responses that are intentionally offensive, inappropriate, and controversial, much like an amateur stand-up comic "who is still learning the craft.". But, even though the FAQ has been updated, the mode isn’t available yet. We along with other media houses searched for it within the Grok interface but couldn’t find it.

The idea behind Grok has always been to push back against the usual AI restrictions. Musk has described it as an alternative to “woke” AI, one that’s unrestricted and willing to discuss hot-button issues. In some ways, it delivers, as Grok conveniently drops some profanity when asked. But, it still doesn’t go too far when it comes to political topics, often leaning left on issues like transgender rights and inequality, a study found.

Musk has blamed this on Grok’s training data, which comes from public web pages. He’s promised to make Grok more politically neutral, saying the internet is filled with “woke nonsense” that influences its responses. He reassures users that Grok is still in its beta phase and will improve.

Musk and his supporters, including David Sacks (a key figure in Trump’s circle), have argued that many AI chatbots suppress conservative viewpoints. Sacks has singled out OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a prime example, accusing it of pushing progressive agendas. Grok, on the other hand, aims to avoid this, but how much it can change remains to be seen.
