Can a TikTok Ban In The US Positively Impact Kids, American Parents Say Yes

The deadline for a complete ban on the TikTok app is fast approaching. The platform is just weeks away from being pulled out of American app stores thanks to a bill approved by the Senate.

Now, it’s interesting how many share different opinions about the ban with creators upset but parents, not so much. American parents were asked to share opinions on whether or not they felt the ban would prove fruitful for their kids.

They did agree that the impact would be positive as it would offer more security in the social media realms. Now we would like to make it clear here that the purpose of the ban initiated by lawmakers was never concerns having to do with minors. It was more about the threat to national security thanks to TikTok’s parent company that’s based in China.

Still, TikTok keeps getting viewed negatively in different aspects. This includes the types of recommendations that it pulls out, the way it impacts users’ attention spans, and also how much content it’s exposing young minds to. Parents are worried about the kind of addictive material on display and how kids spend long screen time on this app.

A new survey from SecurityOrg featured more than 1,000 American parents. The purpose was to get more insights on this front. And we’ve summarized the results for you below.

For starters, nearly 50% of all parents spoke about how a TikTok ban might help better their child’s safety. Many felt the app is the most dangerous thing out there for the youth, alongside Snapchat. So you can see how parents are generally very concerned about what their kids are seeing on social media.

The report went on to investigate which areas parents felt were the most problematic. Now they did agree that platforms are doing more in terms of ensuring security and risks to a major degree. But if the app was removed as a whole, then they felt that would make a major difference.

As a whole, most parents spoke about how they are well aware that the TikTok app generates great opportunities for young creators who are striving to make a living with the cost of inflation at its peak. Therefore, they were okay with TikTok remaining, provided the necessary security measures were in place at all times. Not that will not make much of a difference in the bill that’s said to come into effect in a few days. But still, lawmakers might want to consider that when looking at the app in a broader context.
