BlueSky's Growth Slows After Record-Breaking 2024 Amid Declining Downloads

BlueSky has been getting new users constantly and it is becoming a problem for X too. No one imagined that BlueSky would be able to become an alternative to X, but it succeeded in accomplishing that but Elon Musk doesn't want that. It is quite a known fact that most users move to BlueSky from X whenever Elon Musk acts provocatively or says something controversial. Users on X don't have a reason to move to BlueSky if Elon Musk stays quiet. Even though it isn't that big of a problem because there's a lot of difference in the number of users of X and Bluesky, sustained growth is important too.

In 2024, BlueSky saw an all time high growth with over 25 million users. The first wave of growth came in September 2024 when Brazilian users of X shifted to BlueSky after banning X in Brazil. It was because Elon wasn't complying with the Brazilian government so the government shut down X in the country. Another growth of BlueSky was seen in October 2024 when Elon Musk changed how blocking works on X and the biggest growth of BlueSky was seen during election time in the US.

But now, as per AppFigures BlueSky weekly downloads are decreasing, with 2.4 million weekly downloads to 209k in the last week of December. Web traffic also touched 50 million users in a single week to 30 million in the last week of December. On the other hand, X’s web traffic touched 1.8 billion weekly views during election time. BlueSky’s web traffic is still doing a lot better and remaining consistent but it is not as good as X. But the top reason why a lot of users are still on X is because Elon Musk hasn't done anything controversial in a while nor has he implemented new policies or features on the platform. Once he does something, we will see some more growth of users on BlueSky.
