Bluesky’s Growth Fell From 189% to 10% In December 2024, New Report Proves

Despite experiencing a period of massive success and popularity in November, popular social media app and X archrival Bluesky failed to maintain the same growth in December.

The news comes to us after stats were published by Similarweb which detailed more on the findings. It showed how September had more than 9 million new users and that jumped to 20 million users in November. But the same couldn’t be maintained in December, resulting in a massive fall in figures. This meant the company didn’t close 2024 on a high, contrary to what it might have imagined.

Looking at the analysis, figures for both web traffic and daily mobile app usage were taken into consideration. That is where it found Bluesky’s growth to be just 10% Month over Month (MoM) as compared to the successful 189% it saw in November.

Daily active users on the mobile app across America grew just 12% which again is a major fall from the 284% growth seen in the month before. It’s alarming as the platform did begin to adopt many of the features seen on X. Perhaps that strategy didn’t do them much good in the end.

At the moment, Bluesky has 26.4M users as a whole. Much of the growth did come from users choosing to exit X after seeing the results of the 2024 Presidential elections. Musk started to show his pro-Republican side and many didn’t like his close links with Donald Trump.

Moreover, X was all about marketing the Republican campaign and that’s not what people had come over here to see. So many users spoke about their discontentment and headed to Bluesky in search of some more peaceful and positive vibes.

The matter sent the company’s app to the top of the American App Store charts in November where it hit the first position rank. The most successful period for the platform was outlined to be between November 13 to November 21, 2024, as per data published by Appfigures.

Bluesky kept on attracting a lot of mainstream attention and so many users including media personnel, celebrities, and authors hopped on the Bluesky bandwagon in November.

Now as per the data published, the growth (or we can call it the peak time) is over and things are beginning to normalize which we can expect with an app this big. We’d just like to clarify one thing. Growth hasn’t stopped, it’s still happening but not to the massive extent it was before.

Another interesting point worth noticing is how the app grew much faster than Meta’s Threads in December which happens to be another major arch-rival in the industry. Both mobile and desktop visits in America grew 9.6% MoM while the visits on Threads fell 1.6%.

Around the globe, website visits on the Bluesky app were up 9.5% MoM in December which came thanks to mostly US viewership. That’s greater than Threads which saw a 5.7% rise and X which displayed a 2.4%.

Bluesky’s bigger audience indicates how the new platform is facing a lot of pains in terms of growth like users upset with its new moderation rules. There are major concerns related to bots popping up on the app and threats from bad actors on the rise. They’re involved in username impersonation that the company made attempts to address in another recent update.

All in all, we cannot forget that Bluesky had a lot of success in 2024 as a whole. The YoY global growth was 930% and that’s huge for any small-scale app.
