US Senate Passes New Take It Down Act That Protects AI-Generated Revenge Porn Victims

The growing number of revenge porn cases has left the US Senate with no choice but to pass a new Take It Down Act to help curb the issue.

The bill is designed to keep victims of such dangerous behavior safe from the illegal actions of others trying to defame them with AI-generated images published online. These deepfakes continue to circulate until they become viral and hence cause a great amount of distress to the victim.

Thankfully, that won’t be the case in the US now after the bill’s passing. This gives both website owners and social media companies just two days to remove the fake images when it was reported by the victim in question.

All those innocent people including many young females who found it hard to seek justice don’t need to worry as they can take action against anyone trying to defame them, lawmakers confirmed. They also shared how the world of Big Tech will now be held accountable for ensuring websites delete all disgusting videos and pictures immediately.

While the bill did move through the Senate, Cruz shared that it needs to gain acceptance from the House so that it can transform into law in the US. Clearly, this is a landmark ruling and a huge step to protecting victims. Furthermore, the law also states that if a victim did consent to make a porn picture of themselves, it didn’t mean that they gave consent to publish it by anyone and at any time.

At the moment, each state has its own series of laws that cover deepfake NCIIs instead of entering federal law. This might make matters worse as every state is different and their persecution laws might vary including penalties.

The matter is certainly very concerning because the same images can not only cause emotional harm it can harm the reputation and give rise to more crimes like defamation, financial scams, and even harassment. And as per recent statistics, the number of fraud incidents rose tenfold between 2022 and 2023.

We saw in 2022 how Congress did pass a law that allowed civil suits against perpetrators but actual prosecution could be so hard for victims due to how complex and time-consuming the whole ordeal turns out to be. This includes the high costs attached.
