According to a new poll by Quinnipiac University, 59% of the people in the US want a similar social media ban for kids under 16 as the one that happened in Australia. Australia has passed a bill recently which bans children under the ages of 16 from using social media. This law is not for platforms like YouTube but other social media platforms like Snapchat, X, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok and Facebook. The poll by the university found that 6 in 10 respondents want the same ban as Australia to be imposed in the US but there were also 31% of the respondents who do not want that.
The voters who were between the ages of 18 and 34 had mixed responses, with minority of them not in favour of a similar ban in the US (46%). But there were respondents 50% in the same age bracket that supported the similar ban on social media in the US.
The results of the polling were followed by an announcement by the Supreme Court that stated that they would look up if the TikTok ban would violate the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has said that it would hold multiple oral hearings to listen to arguments about whether the TikTok ban should happen or not. The US wants to separate TikTok in the US from its Chinese parent company and if it doesn't happen, TikTok will have to face a ban in the US. TikTok had filed an application to justices to delay the hearing until January 19th, 2024.
