OpenAI Allows Users To Make Phone Calls To ChatGPT For 15 Minutes On +18002428478

The makers of ChatGPT are rolling out an innovative means to communicate with the chatbot on the phone.

OpenAI just launched a number where users get the chance to talk for free when they dial the respective 1-800-CHATGPT number using their devices or use direct web link. There’s a 15-minute time limit to prevent anyone from overusing the feature but if you ask us, that’s more than enough. One caveat, however, is that on Whatsapp this feature currently does not support voice response understanding, or image/video uploads.

The feature was launched a couple of weeks back when the company’s leading product officer shared the idea through a livestream with users. Interestingly, it’s not just for US users but those located anywhere else in the world can do the same with the global phone number 1-800-242-8478 (or +18002428478).

While the limit of 15 minutes is there, you still have the chance to spin up a couple of calls with various Google Voice numbers. This way, you certainly get more than what you want. The whole concept is built around the company’s Realtime API. Furthermore, it’s powered by its GPT-4o mini via the WhatsApp API.
The latest feature is an integral stepping stone for all those who are new since it represents a simple variant of the tools compared to the web-based ordeal. It’s cost effective so you can really make the most of it through several different channels. The rest can continue using this through the classic channel.

We have to admit that Google did share something similar in the year 2007 when users were given another free directory voice assistant. But just after three years, it was discontinued in 2010. There wasn’t any kind of explanation provided by the Android maker before it was scrapped off the list.

Still, many speculated that had to do with achieving its main target which was collecting user data to better the speech recognition tech. The company’s VP at the time even shared how the goal of the tech giant was to gather as many phonemes as possible. This was the only way they could produce the most robust speech model. All that data would be used for training.

Therefore there are a lot of concerns from some about where this latest innovative approach stands for OpenAI and whether or not users’ data would be stored for the same reasons. Thankfully, the AI giant did refute claims and reiterated how no user data would be collected for training purposes.
