Streaming service giant Netflix just received a major blow from a Dutch watchdog for tracking users and collecting their personal data.
The fine stands at a whopping 4.75M Euros as the company failed to disclose what it was going to use the information for after collecting it. This news comes after nearly five years since the complaint was rolled out, the DPA shared.
The Dutch regulator delineated how Netflix gathered personal information from all of its users including email IDs, phone numbers, payment details, and even viewing habits. This also featured the exact timings that they used to log into the platform to watch anything.
Netflix is a huge organization and for them to keep collecting data in billions is a huge deal to many people. The fact that it does this and chooses not to be transparent about the whole issue is another major concern to many people out there today.
There are several questions put forward to Netflix and it just failed to provide details on the shady behavior. This includes the purpose of data collection, where it’s used, and what is shared with other leading third parties and for which reason.
The streaming service didn’t clarify the amount of time it retains this personal information of users and how it ensures it remains safe in its collection. As it is, this is a huge violation of the GDPR in the EU as users are; aware of what, where, and when their information is collected.
The investigation began in 2019 when eight leading complaints were filed on the matter against leading streaming giants including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, and Amazon. They were forwarded to the Dutch DPA as Netflix’s main establishment is in this region.
The decision made by the DPA to issue fines against the streaming giant is bringing delight to many people’s faces as it was a long time coming. Five years for an extremely simple case is quite a long timeframe. Did we mention how Netflix has decided to revise the entire privacy statement since then and even gone ahead to provide more details by being more transparent? Clearly, quite a lot of good is coming out of this case.
