Iran Eases Internet Restrictions By Lifting Ban on WhatsApp and Google Play

Iran is on a mission to ease internet restrictions for users. The latest news on this front is the lifting of a ban across the popular texting app WhatsApp and the Google Play Store.

The change was welcomed by many citizens around the nation who were left with no other choice but to resort to using VPNs to get access to social media. As per the country’s authorities, it’s a huge step towards easing the country's strict internet controls.

The decision is also the first step to scaling down restrictions on different foreign apps in the Islamic nation. For those who might not be aware, the country is famous for having some very strict rules and regulations in terms of internet access and otherwise.

The news comes after a meeting arose between the country’s head of state who opted to use a positive majority vote as the final decision related to the matter of internet limitations.

As it is, other apps like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter still remain blocked. No news was shared about a possible lifting of this ban but from what we can see right now, it might be on the cards soon.

One of the main reasons for the ban in the first place was the high amount of anti-government posts published online. So many Iranians went against the country’s censorship laws and that gave rise to this.

Meanwhile, the American government also shared more on this front and how it was calling upon more tech giants to help users in nations get access to the apps by evading censorship. So as you can see, this is a major breakthrough in online restrictions. Still, the future remains uncertain in terms of what to expect next.

The move is very positive for now but many remain wary about whether or not Iran would be extending these rules to other famous apps. Also, more talks about whether that will give rise to more freedoms on the internet or not is uncertain. For now, time will tell but nevertheless, locals are celebrating the change.
