Android maker Google wants the world to know that it’s not afraid to be more transparent about how it is making use of generative AI products and services.
The company just shared its Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy to help clear the air about the proper use of all Generative AI offerings. This update gives a detailed overview of what is allowed, and what’s not, and plenty of examples of what it feels comes under unacceptable conduct.
The new policy begins with updates on existing rules without putting new restrictions. It also bans all AI tools under Google’s ownership from producing and sharing intimate or explicit material without consent. Similarly, it stops sharing any material in breach of its security laws seen via malware or phishing.
As per the policy, Google says it wants more people to use and be familiar with AI models in the most safe, responsible, and legal of ways. As far as illegal activities are concerned, it has to do with violence, deception, hate, and explicit content that is deemed illegal. This also is linked to any material having to do with child abuse, self-harm, misinformation, and harassment.
The policy prohibits the use of Google’s generative AI for a wide range of dangerous and unethical activities that were also included like malware and spam that continue to increase with advancing days.
Exceptions allowed include restricted activities in certain contexts. From education and documentaries to artistic and journalistic scenes. Moreover, the harms outweigh the benefits for the general public as well.
For those wondering why this matters or how it impacts them, well, the policy is addressing the rapid advancements that generative AI brings forward. This has to do with creating the most realistic pictures, text, video, and audio. It also raises the major issues linked to ethics, societal issues, and misuse.
For the future, Google says the old and new policies are available for public viewing to see how far the Android maker has come with the advancement of AI. Meanwhile, it’s nothing new as we’ve seen other leading AI firms like Microsoft and OpenAI also roll out similar usage rules in the past.
Still, more awareness must be done to ensure these rules get enforced and there’s no need for an improvement. Remember, Generative AI is becoming so much more common and giving rise to clear usage guidelines that make it essential to enable the best practices and reduce harm across the board.
