Google Unveils Top Trending Searches for 2024 and Here’s What Made the List

As 2024 comes to a close, Google is doing its year-end duties by rolling out lists for the most trending searches of this year. While some might be surprising, others not so much. And we’ve summarized all the details for our readers below.

Donald Trump was certainly more trending than Democratic archrival Kamala Harris, as search trends showed a higher interest. Meanwhile, the world simply couldn’t get enough of content related to the viral Dubai chocolate Kunafe bars. Meanwhile, the Yankees' win was also on many people’s minds, as it showed up on the annual list for the top trending searches of this year.

Google is undoubtedly one of the biggest search engines in the world so when it says something, we better believe it. Do you know that the world’s most visited website is Google? Clearly, that should be enough to trust the results.

Google’s list features what really got big in terms of popularity including what queries had a greater traffic than all others when compared to the previous year. So when you come to think of it, it’s like pondering over what people were curious about this year as compared to the next.

It’s important to note that these figures come from Google search only and not from other domains and platforms like YouTube, Gemini Chatbot, and others. However, we would like to confirm that the hum searches tool is also a part of the stats as it’s designed to fine-tune what the search is all about.

For starters, let’s take a look at the leading global search trends for 2024. As far as which search term made it big this year is concerned, the award goes to Copa America and that was followed up closely with another leading soccer tournament by the name UEFA European Championship. Sports was certainly trending as two other cricket tournaments made it big including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a certain test match between England and India.

Other than that, the other top six search terms also included leading sporting events. This includes the Olympics which took position nine while Liam Payne was the top term in this list. His shocking death made One Direction fans so sad as many searched for more details as to how his tragic death arose. Donald Trump took the fifth position while the iPhone 16 and Princess of Wales rounded up this list.

Moving on, Google kept people updated with this year’s Election insights. The searches were a clear reflection of anything and everything happening in the US including Trump’s mighty win against rival Kamala Harris. While he was the top search trend, Harris failed to complete against him. Meanwhile, Trump’s gunshot incident made it to the Top 10 List for Global news while Trump outranked Kamala Harris in American trend lists for Google.

Last year, Google highlighted the dispute in Gaza as the top trend searched online but it failed to state that this was the same trend followed this year. When we look at current affairs, the war in Gaza didn’t make the list but the elections did the US as did the Paris Olympics. Other leading news events included Rafah and Iran as well as the Menendez brothers.

Natural disasters are known for making the list of most searched news events and 2024 was no exception. But as shocking as it can be, many were too keenly interested in the viral Dubai chocolate bar. It surged in terms of results and many were so curious about this rich delicacy featuring crunchy pistachio filling that went viral in an instant. People were keenly interested in how to buy, where to buy, and how much it was for. Meanwhile, others just wanted the recipe to cherish a copycat version at home.

It’s clear that people are obsessed with food as two leading internet theories related to this category were the top trending searches for American audiences this year. One was linked to burnt toast while the other had to do with orange peel.
