Google Tests AI-Driven 'Things to Know,' Possibly Replacing Featured Snippets with AI-Powered Overviews

It looks like search giant Google is staying true to its claims that AI will be the future.

The company has started a new test that uses its LLMs to generate information for the Things to Know section. These might soon be powered by AI and therefore will be very similar in appearance to AI Overviews from what experts have gauged so far. It’s also quite prevalent in the section dubbed What People are Saying so we might be seeing the changes arriving sooner than later.

Many feel this is more evidence of how Google might replace things like featured snippets with the likes of AI Overviews. The former was initially designed to power the Things To Know section.

The first text was spotted by an X user Sachin Patel who shared the news but we couldn’t replicate the feature. However, he did share a couple of screenshots for greater clarity through his post.

What’s particularly notable is how this move could align with Google's broader strategy of reshaping SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) to prioritize AI-generated content. This not only reflects Google's push to integrate LLMs but also raises questions about the future role of human-curated snippets in search. Plus, the shift could signify a competitive response to the growing influence of AI-powered search experiences provided by rivals such as Microsoft’s Bing.
