If you’re sick and tired of seeing all the AI-generated content or edited images circulated online, well, it seems like Meta has the perfect fix.
The tech giant is testing out a new note option for Facebook users that enables them to add ‘No Edit’ labels to untouched stories. This means it will specify if the image on display was edited through the platform or not.
As shared by one top researcher, users get the chance to long tap on any picture in the camera roll and share it without going through the unnecessarily long editing process. This means the entire posting procedure gets more streamlined to share real-time updates. You can even add it to the story frame.
As per Meta, the goal seems to be adding a new kind of authenticity to content that wasn’t possible beforehand. By admitting from the start that the picture was untouched, viewers get to more about the story.
However, the company says that does not mean the user didn’t use another picture editing platform and then uploaded it through Stories. Meta further shared it did have some kind of detection in place when users make external edits.
Still, it’s not 100% reliable and Meta acknowledges that. Hence, some might still be able to make changes and get away with using this tag. As a whole, the concept gives rise to more trust, especially during an era where AI content is bombarding the social media circle.
Thanks to AI, experts confirmed that it’s so hard to differentiate real from fake on in-stream content. It’s a major drawback for social media apps that continue to add more AI features for users to avail. Many things that we see online are not real or they don’t really represent real experiences and that’s obviously a huge bummer.
There are already AI labels in place for AI material and customized watermarks for pictures designed using Meta apps. Still, they cannot cover all externally produced pictures.
So No Edit Notes does seem very interesting and could assist in so many cases, some might end up abusing it and scamming users with images made through external platforms. For many, it’s a sigh of relief to see natural content that’s real and untouched but others feel it’s the trend of AI so why make the most of it. What do you think?
