Elon Musk never fails to surprise the world and this time around, he’s leaving his most loyal customers on X stunned.
The tech billionaire couldn’t possibly imagine ending the year without a bang and that came in the form of an unwanted surprise. X Premium users’ subscriptions are going up by almost 40%. This news comes to us thanks to the company’s Help Center.
Referring to the matter as Premium+ Price Adjustment, the new subscription will come at an eye-watering price tag of $22 each month in America. This is certainly a steep rise from the past month where it stood at $16 per month. Now, the annual costs for the Premimum+ subscription will also rise to $229 each year.
This was shared over the weekend and it went into effect for all new users starting December 21. If you’re already an old subscriber, the change for you is slightly delayed to January 20. If there’s any renewal charges before this, it would be at the old rates, Musk adds.
If you’re not located in America, you’re bound to be impacted too. Costs would be even higher than those seen in America. For instance, those in Canada will witness a surge from $20 to $26. Those in Australia will see the prices jump from $26 to $35. But those in nations like Nigeria will see the hike from $5 to $22.
We must mention that these changes are for all subscriptions done through the X website directly. X will charge a lot more funds for covering costs through mobile devices and when making a purchase via third-party locations such as the App Store.
Now the question on many people’s minds is what’s the big deal with Premium X and why is there a sudden rise in prices to begin with. Well, we can confirm that many users know that when you pay more, you get more. In this case, it’s all about fewer ads, blue ticks, greater access to X’s Grok, and the chance to apply for monetization.
The launch did not come without controversy. Many had enough and that’s why Musk opted to launch pricing tiers so that different plans would be available for selection. The higher the tier, the more the features. As per X, it’s pricer now so they can invest more to make it better. Now the question is if it’s worth it.
