China is stepping up its ban against the US on exports of crucial elements used to manufacture technology.
The news comes as a part of its retaliation against America’s latest export curbs announced by the Government on Monday. This limits a number of leading Chinese firms from getting access to any foreign materials like American-manufactured chips.
This made officials in China so upset that they punched back with a harder blow in the shape of its ban that came into play with immediate effect. The ban will be on all dual-use materials such as superhard materials and crucial minerals including gallium, antimony, and germanium.
As per reports confirmed by Reuters, these materials are crucial for products and tech linked to civil and military users. Meanwhile, banning the rare earth elements would adversely impact making tech in the country.
Such a powerful retaliation wasn’t expected as America risks losing access to crucial metals used for manufacturing several kinds of goods if new trade restrictions arise on China. As confirmed by the country’s spokesperson during an urgent press conference yesterday, the country is doing everything to protect the best interests and rights of the companies.
It also feels the need to step up and safeguard national security and interests. It’s really going to affect America as it restricts access to crucial coating elements used for nearly all tech products. This includes cable wires and nuclear reactors.
What is surprising to many is how China stayed more muted after Biden's last decision to increase export taxes. Now, this harsher decision could be in line with Trump’s call for a possible rise in tariffs for all goods coming from China after he takes oath as president.
In experts’ view, this would drastically impact American businesses and any allies associated. Moreover, it does very little in terms of restricting China from getting access to American tech. We’ve already seen a major blow come in the form of Chinese officials warning local companies against the use of American chips. They called it risky and no longer safe to use.
It’s interesting how the claims were not justified with evidence on what makes it unsafe but such warnings might hurt American chipmaking giants such as AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.
