A new survey by Statista Consumer Insights shows how many people upgrade their electronic devices even if their older models still work. According to the survey, it was found that three in ten respondents from Germany, UK and Spain upgrade their older electronics even if they are fully functional. Most of this practice is done in China with 36% of the respondents saying that they buy new models of electronics even when their older models are still working.
33% of the respondents do so in Brazil, followed by 31% in Germany and the UK each. In Spain, 30% of the respondents reported that they upgrade their electronics as soon as a new model is available and discard the older one. This practice was also seen in Mexico (29%), US (27%) and France (22%).
Even though a lot of people upgrade their electronics to new models, this is an unwise practice. It not only harms the environment, it can also be considered a waste of money. It takes a lot to make new electronics, from sourcing raw material to producing them using energy sources. Moreover, once the older models are disposed of, issues about e-waste management also rise. Instead of spending money on something useful, people tend to waste it on buying an upgraded model of electronics even if the older one is working fine.
