Passwordless Future Is Now A Reality As New Study Says More Than 200 Top Companies Added Passkey Support

We’ve been hearing a lot about the trend related to a passwordless future. Now, we can confirm that this might be a reality sooner than what experts might have anticipated.

The news comes to us thanks to a new study by 1Password which shared data about the adoption trends related to passkeys and how many major firms are using them.

There is a clear shift from what we’re seeing now 206 different organizations added support this year. It’s getting milestone status as more and more businesses are looking for safer and more convenient solutions for authentication.

Today, the number of organizations using passkeys doubled since the start of 2023. We’re talking about some of the biggest businesses like Walmart, Canva, Discord, Amazon, and Target making the list of passkey users. This just goes to show how appealing passkeys have become over time throughout different segments.

Two years back, the initiative for a safer means of authentication came into being. Many were unsure just how safe and easy to use Passkeys would be as the change from passwords was certainly a major one. While the majority refused to make the shift, others did open up to the trend and today, they’re so glad they jumped on the bandwagon.

These comprise a security key or biometrics and rid of the age-old password. It’s all thanks to the FIDO Alliance who partnered up with tech giants Apple, Microsoft, and Google to get the tech up and running.

If we talk about just the 1Password stats, today, more than 4.2M passkeys were saved inside 1Password. There’s an average of 2.1M passkey authentications every month. Moreover, 1 in 3.4 passkey clients have a minimum of one passkey stored while the majority of users have consumer accounts.

Such adoption metrics are not just a huge milestone for 1Password but it’s also proof that many clients are putting trust in passkeys to give them the most reliable solution and support.

Furthermore, 1Password made headlines when it rolled out its latest Passkey Ready offering that would assist web developers check if users could upgrade from old passwords to the new Passkey offering at the year’s start.

The FIDO Alliance also shared new specifications regarding this which includes giving support for greater imports and exports of keys from various password managers. In terms of iOS users, it’s already been up for grabs on Safari since the start of iOS 16’s launch and was also getting integrated into iOS 17 for third-party platforms.
