Tech giant OpenAI has just purchased Chat.com, adding another high-profile domain name to its already massive collection.
The deal was made during the morning hours today and that’s when it was confirmed that Chat.com will now redirect toward the company’s AI popular tool ChatGPT. One spokesperson for the company confirmed this purchase through email.
For those who might not be aware, this is one of the oldest domains found on the internet with a registration going as far back as September 1996. In the past year, another report was made related to how it was purchased for a staggering $15.5M. This made it one of the top-reported domain sales around the world.
The deal was done by the CTO of HubSpot. Moreover, other details shared how this domain name was soon sold off to another entity but the buyer remained anonymous. Later today, a post was published through X where it was confirmed that OpenAI is the buyer which meant the deal was done through payments via the company’s shares.
The domain name is still the same as it was after the sale last year so that means OpenAI is not hosting ChatGPT on that domain. It’s also another way to mention that it does not represent any sort of brand change.
When the AI giant was asked to comment or reflect on the matter, it chose to remain silent. It also refused to declare the amount it paid for the deal which means a statement from the company could come sooner than later.
Whatever the case may be, OpenAI is certainly a powerful company by the looks of it. They’re on a roll in terms of expansion.
