Last week Meta’s Q3 performance update was published. This is where the tech giant also had to share its latest EU user count figures as a compulsory requirement of the Digital Services Act.
This is where the world witnessed Instagram rivaling Facebook for the first time, which many called an interesting shift. We don’t remember when was the last time this happened in the region as Facebook is known for taking the top spot on the leaderboard for popular apps.
To be more specific, stats showed that Instagram has 269M active users each month in the EU while Facebook has 260M. When Meta rolled out its first EU report for 2023, both apps had similar user counts which stood at 259M.
Seeing Instagram supersede Facebook which is known to be Meta’s flagship platform is certainly a breath of fresh air. This does mean however that Facebook is witnessing much slower growth and a slight fall in usage during this period of April to September 2024.
This might be a popular trend around the globe and Facebook might be losing out on its audience while Instagram inches on top with more users. For now, we don’t know anything for sure as Meta did not report Facebook’s MAU this year. Instead, it prefers to provide reports for its family of apps where Facebook and Instagram combine with Messenger, Threads, and WhatsApp to give one total figure.
We’d like to remind you that these figures are only for the EU region and it’s very much possible that the user base for Facebook is growing elsewhere such as the US. Whatever the case might be, it’s still an interesting point worth mentioning that Instagram is raising the bar, even if the case is for selected markets.
Experts cannot help but weigh in on why Facebook isn’t favored as much by the EU audience. When you sit down and think about it, it might be related to the addition of better data privacy rules in the EU. It lets users know what data the app takes in and uses for different reasons. This might turn a lot of people off. Another major reason might be linked to finding the platform more outdated than others. Lastly, some experts feel that Instagram is more modern in design and interface and therefore is a hit with younger audiences. What do you think?
