Bluesky just went public with a new milestone that described its surge in users with record-breaking downloads.
The news might be great for the app but it’s certainly worrying for arch rivals like Meta whose Threads platform is seriously feeling the heat. This is why Zuckerberg and his team of executives are rolling out new changes on the Threads app to give it that edge.
If that means copying Bluesky’s famous ‘customized feed’ feature, then so be it. Meta just confirmed its latest test that allows users to pin favorite topics to their home screens of the platform.
This gives users another great feed that’s separate from the algorithm called ‘For You’ that continues to be in the default view. The same goes for the following feed. In this manner, users can include custom feeds by looking for keywords like healthy recipes and then pressing on the three-dot menu to create a new feed.
Such feeds get customized by including certain profiles of users that you’d like to see more and be alert of when something new is published. On average, users can include up to 128 feeds through the app, Meta confirmed.
It’s just a test for now but if things do go as planned, we’re going to see a very similar feature that has made Bluesky popular. We’ll need to wait for the green signal from Meta before users get access but this is certainly a good start.
The offering is quite like Bluesky’s customized feed that it rolled out in 2023. The only difference is Bluesky’s is more technical in design while Meta’s version appears to be very clear-cut and simple. It just might address complaints from users regarding Threads’ main feed as well.
The news comes amid Bluesky’s celebrations of success this month and in the previous one. It’s quite smaller in scale compared to Threads and X but even with 17M users, it’s quickly getting fame and picking up the pace for expansion.
After the election, it was shocking to see Bluesky add one million more people in just seven days. It’s striking because we’ve seen Threads also grow by 1M people each day, which the company’s chief Adam Mosseri personally confirmed.
