Is OpenAI Taking Market Share From Google? Here’s What Experts Have to Say

The makers behind the popular ChatGPT AI tool, OpenAI, might be taking market share from Google.

A leading expert from Sparktoro, Rand Fishkin, shared some insights that are based on a complete mix of information through SimilarWeb and Datos that explains more on this matter.

He states that ChatGPT’s market share at this moment in time is 4.33% as per data taken from last month. Meanwhile, Google has a market share of 83.54%, with YouTube second at 6.79%, Bing at 1.9%, and the rest of the social media market like Reddit, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Perplexity all having a combo of 3.37%.

More insights were given on this front from Marcus Tober of Semrush who shared information that assumed ChatGPT continued its growth streak of 13% MoM, it would soon catch up to reach Google in just four years.

What is interesting here is that you can't ignore the search giant for now as the leading Google listings appear 72% in Perplexity’s results. The same top search results from Google arise in 22% of all cases seen with ChatGPT. There’s also a visible correlation of similar Google sources seen on the Perplexity platform. So the higher you rank on the search engine Google, the greater the chances of being displayed on Perplexity.
