Google Might Let Users Hide Their Real Email Address From Android Apps

Tech giant Google is working on a new ‘Shielded Email’ feature.

This is designed to let users hide their real email addresses from Android apps. This isn’t the case for Apple devices which already allow users to disguise their real email IDs with creative addresses forwarded to users’ personal inboxes. It’s called Hide My Email and was launched in 2021 with prices hitting just $1 each month which entails 50GB.

The company says it’s now working to roll out equivalent features called Shield Email. This keeps your email IDs private, as spotted by 9to5Google and AndroidAuthority. Shielded Email is present when users sign up for new accounts inside Android platforms. Leaked code explained how this feature can protect from online tracking and data breaches. This will enable users to roll out Shielded Emails when they make new accounts online.

All emails get forwarded to the real account with chances to switch off forwarding at any point in time on Google, in case spam is running at a high. The reference to Google Accounts is quite interesting and could suggest settings would be available through Android and myaccount.google.com.

The experience seems to combine Android’s autofill with Google Password Manager. Whenever users see spam, they can turn off the option of forwarding at any point in time through their Google Account. You can use email IDs created for this platform. It protects you from activities like online tracking or simple data breaches.

It remains seen if Google will charge for this latest offering like Apple is doing or not. Anyways, it just serves as the best encouragement for people signing up on Google One. Making this paid might be a great way to prevent abuse of the latest functionality.
