Google Cloud Is About to Force 2FA—Here’s What You Need to Know

If you happen to be an avid Google Cloud user who wasn’t too impressed with the security and privacy of the platform, then we’ve got news for you.

The company is really stepping up in this respect by encouraging all to pay attention to a new update. This latest reminder wants users to learn about the pros of two-factor authentication or 2FA and why all new and existing users must make use of it. This means transforming it into a new and mandatory requirement when logging in through passwords.

An update on this topic was made by the platform’s VP Mayank Upadhyay who talked about the security change coming in 2025. But from the looks of it, this might be coming into play sooner than later.

The goal is to give the strongest security for all clients as Google has seen how 2FA really makes the process much stronger without compromising on the likes of a smooth user online experience. Upadhyay also shared how Google Cloud will give the most advanced alerts to users so they can plan it all out properly. Now the question is what does this change mean for users practically?

The implementation process begins immediately with phase one. This is where Google is motivating users to adopt this 2FA tech when they are signing in with passwords and are not a part of the majority who make use of 2FA already.
Phase two started during the early part of next year when Google didn’t confirm the real date for the 2FA activation. So far, we can confirm that the change is not only for new users but those with existing accounts. You will see alerts soon on this change through gCloud, Cloud Console, and even Firebase Console. If you don’t opt-in, you cannot use the platform. It’s as simple as that.

The final phase or phase three will arise by 2025 end and will feature all mandatory 2FA requirements when logging into the platform. You will also have a lot of flexible options to fulfill the requirements. This means you can activate 2FA through your main identity provider before getting through Google Cloud. Another way to access will be to add the additional 2FA layer of security via Google’s system through the Google account.
