In case you didn’t know, Gen Z makes up close to 40% of the overall mobile user market. Therefore, seeing trends related to this generation can give us a good idea about which social media apps were a big hit and which ones took a massive miss.
Thanks to stats provided by Appfigures and Techcrunch, we’re discussing the most popular and downloaded apps in 2024 for our readers below. So let’s take a look!
The data shared was related to those between the 18 to 24 year age bracket as those below couldn’t be included due to privacy reasons. This information is also restricted to US audiences only but even then, it gives us a clearer picture of the choices made by those in the older bracket.
From famous e-commerce apps to the best social media platforms today, not to mention famous picture editing tools too, here’s a list of all those that made it big this year. For starters, the app that got the most love in terms of downloads on both the iOS and Android user base was Temu.
We aren’t quite surprised as online shopping has become so convenient thanks to the platform that provides the best deals, quality, and convenience under one roof. You can name any product and expect to find nothing less than the best in terms of very discounted rates.
As far as downloads are concerned, Temu was nearly downloaded 41.9M times which just goes to show how keen people are in terms of using it. It’s also related to sustainability and the massive debate linked to fast fashion. The use of rewards, free gifts, and coupons adds to the list and people cannot seem to get enough.
Another arch-rival of Temu is Shein which may have been a favorite for Gen Z in the past but it could only get 14.6M new downloads. We don’t see this as a lack of interest in the platform. However, it does mean that many could still be using it as they installed it before.
So who took the second top spot for downloads? It’s no surprise here as the winner is TikTok with a massive 33.2M downloads. It’s got a lot to offer and simply has the younger generation hooked. The content is simple, attractive, and can be digested with ease. Another point worth mentioning is how the Gen Z-dominated platform sees it as their own Google. Yes, they treat it similar to how people use Google.
Another apps that continue to strike a chord with Gen Z is YouTube. Over 10 months, the app hit 14.3M new downloads. While we agree this figure isn’t as high as that seen with TikTok, it still highlights a massive amount of engagement present in the group.
Last but not least, one other platform getting much love is ShortMax. It includes nearly 1000 short films of various themes. You could ask for comedy, chick flick, action, or thriller and get everyone you want. To date, the app has received a lot of love from Gen Z with downloads hitting the 10M figure so far during this year. Below table shows other apps and their number of downloads:
