Consumer Complaints About Unwanted Phone Calls Drop 50% Since 2021, FTC Confirms

There’s nothing worse than receiving an unwanted telemarketing phone call that just wastes your time. If you happen to be the average American, you probably did end up making a complaint to the FTC about that.

Thankfully, things are getting much better as we end 2024. The latest FTC report published found that the number of complaints regarding unwanted phone calls has dropped 50% since the year 2021. This is in continuation of a trend that began nearly three years back.

In 2024, the findings showed how America’s top regulating body got 1.1M reports about robocalls which fell from 1.2M seen in 2023 and 3.4M seen in the year 2021.

The highest figures for complaints made by consumers had to do with unwanted calls linked to medical reasons or problems with prescriptions. A whopping 170K reports were made until September of this year.

All the stats were published in 2024’s National Do Not Call Registry Data Book. This also included a lot of reports linked to imposters or those posing to be someone that they’re really not. The registry recorded up to 158K complaints on this front.

More complaints were made regarding debt reductions which came in third as the most frequently reported issue and that was again followed up with complaints regarding energy, utilities, and solar, not to mention cleaning and home improvement.

The FTC took credit for the great milestone and mentioned that the growing crackdown on unwanted calls is working and these figures are proof of that. The DNC Registry was first rolled out in 2003 and designed to prevent unwanted sales calls through real firms who wished to follow the law.

Since the start, the registry grew to hit 254M active registrations in September and consumers were given the chance to apple with their phone numbers that they’d like to register. You can even file a complaint by calling the toll-free number or adding the web address donotcall.gov. It’s also interesting to note how sellers and those involved in the telemarketing sector need to get rid of numbers they add into the registry from call lists, every month.

The news was successful for the FTC which also banned impersonation calls of any business or any political figure under this rule. They also expanded their law for Telemarketing Sales to keep the community safe against all kinds of illegal campaigns.
