At the start of this year, we heard about OpenAI’s ambitious plans to add a new Advanced Voice feature for ChatGPT. This held the capability to reply to audio in 232ms. This is the same amount of time that the average human takes to reply in a simple chat.
Meanwhile, in September, the company launched its Advanced Voice mode through iOS and Android platforms. This was limited to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team users located in the US. Shortly after that, we heard about OpenAI expanding the launch of ChatGPT Advanced Voice to those in the UK, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the EU. Then in October, we saw it roll out to those using ChatGPT on desktops through Windows and macOS.
Today, OpenAI just confirmed the rollout of its Advanced Voice mode to more devices. To use it, you can enter the ChatGPT desktop domain seen across web browsers. And if you’re already a ChatGPT Plus or Edu subscriber, please visit the website through a modern browser and begin talking away.
The company's CPO Kevin Weil did confirm that it was rolling out the Advanced Voice version to ChatGPT free users in the next few weeks. The insights shared by OpenAI show users can really make the most of this, especially those trying to prepare for a presentation.
What’s different here, you might ask? Well, it’s better conversational speed, smoothness, and accent that’s provided support in different foreign languages. It delivered a host of improvements to the Advanced Voice mode endeavor like support for up to five different voices in a single go. It can also enable users to provide customized instructions and ask the tool to recall chats for reference in the future.
Some users provided feedback on X where they asked the OpenAI chief if anything could be done about the chatbot interrupting in between response. And that’s when the CPO confirmed that this is in the pipeline after the great amount of feedback they’ve received. He also stated that the feature will get better with time.
For now, there are continuous improvements taking place and with greater availability, the feature will transform how people can interact with the AI tool forever. So you can exact a more natural and free-flowing conversation in the end.
