We’ve witnessed iPhone maker Apple go back and forth with the long list of EU regulations and the changes needed to comply with them.
Today, we heard more on this front including talks about a new document where Apple has given the green signal to enable setting certain translation and navigation apps as default. In case you’re wondering, it’s huge news for Google Maps fans.
The news was first published on Friday when the Cupertino firm shared the new update on compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act. This document mostly had to do with actions that Apple was taking to comply with the DMA.
As first published by MacRumors, one important sentence by Apple that was worth mentioning was future plans for compliance. As per Apple, the Spring of 2025 is when it plans to include more support for setting default options for apps providing navigation and translation services.
All iPhone users across the EU can therefore celebrate as they’ve been praying for this for so long. While Apple Maps did grow in popularity with time, users couldn’t help but speak about how useful it would be to make Google Maps their default option.
While navigation platforms will also be a great and much-appreciated change, navigation platforms on default are what most people will be excited about. This will start debuting next year in April.
We did see the recent iOS 18 beta where it was highlighted how certain default platform categories that were once considered limited to the EU would now be available around the world. This will entail adding calling platforms and messaging apps.
No news on this front by Apple just yet but it’s great to see this as a change in the near future where the world can benefit, not just those iPhone users across the EU. Whatever the case may be, we’re excited and we know iOS users will be extra delighted to hear this. Do let us know what you think!
