Apple Alerts Users To Update To iOS 9 as iCloud Backups Will Cease To Exist

iPhone maker Apple has begun sending out alerts to users who are using older versions of its iOS software.

The company says users need to update older software as iCloud backups will get deleted on any device featuring iOS 8 and any older variant. The Cupertino giant also rolled out the news as a part of its latest support document regarding the change.

The deadline is December 18, 2024, when device backups will need iOS 9 or a later version. This is to help be more aligned with the minimal software requirement. Until this date passes, users will continue using the backup as usual but after the deadline, backup data will be deleted unless users update to this variant or a later version.

If devices are running iOS 8 or an older version, we do advise you to start the update starting the middle of next month. Any old backups would be removed and you are at risk of losing data. The only way out is getting iOS 9 and newer variants.

In case you’re not keen on getting this new version, you do have more alternatives. Apple did outline on the page how manual backups are another option through a Mac or a personal computer.

Users can also link their phones to any Mac that includes a functional macOS Catalina or a newer variant which serves as a backup for this through Finder. In cases when you have a PC or an older variant of macOS, you may use this as a backup through Apple Devices or iTunes apps.

The change was certainly a long time coming. iOS 8 is nearly a decade old so there is no reason why this news should be a surprise to anyone. Now if you do have an older device, we do feel it’s time for a change or an overdue update.
