A new Pew Research survey of 10,658 US adults and a study on 500 influencers found that one in five Americans get their daily news from influencers on social media. This is quite common among young adults (18-29 year olds) with 37% of them getting news from influencers daily. There is also a difference in responses among Democrats and Republicans. This shows that many people do not show any interest in traditional media as their news source because they think that it is often tarnished and influenced by partisan outlets.
Because of that reason, people are shifting to media sources which aren't too biased. Influencers have become the biggest news source for many people. The report also looked at what platforms are people most interested in to get reliable news. The top platform with most news influencers in X/Twitter (85%), followed by Instagram (50%) and YouTube (44%). Even though many reports show that X is losing users, it is still being used by many to get true and unbiased news.
The report also talked about influencers who identify them of a certain political orientation. 27% of news influencers are right-leaning, while 21% of them are left-leaning. Political issues are always complex and it takes a lot of effort to convey news to people which aren't politically biased. Many influencers are leaning towards the right-wing because showing this political orientation is better for business, and it also generates more interest and engagement.
