Tech giant X is back online for users in Brazil, at least for the time being.
The news comes after weeks of dispute and debate between tech billionaire Elon Musk and local authorities. Clearly, both don’t see eye to eye on the matter which is what led to the sudden ban.
Now, it seems like the ban has been lifted after nearly five weeks. Users couldn’t access the app for so long and were therefore turning to other alternatives like Reddit. Now, the country’s Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes mentioned that regulators can take the right stems for its return.
This is only after the company bowed down to the list of requirements by Brazilian authorities including banning unlawful content. Moraes told X that some accounts had to be blocked as they went against the country’s censorship orders.
What is interesting is how Musk’s other company, Starlink was dragged into this issue and all accounts were frozen due to X’s lack of cooperation on the matter. In the end, it was Musk who had to listen, and the respective accounts were blocked and fines of nearly $5M were paid.
A new blog post was published today to signal the app’s return to millions of Brazilians in the country. X says it’s proud to be back but it’s been a tough journey. It also vowed to defend its rights of free speech, within the law, as that is how it operates everywhere around the world.
It looks like the dramatic standoff period is finally over but we must speak about how one app’s loss was another platform’s gain. Thanks to the ban, archrival app Bluesky had service soaring with more users turning to it. In just a few days, it added 2M users after the ban, making the company’s CEO Jack Dorsey happy.
