X Gets One Step Closer To Removing Blocking Feature

Social media giant X is getting one step closer to ridding its blocking functionality.

The company has been exploring the feature for more than a year. What is interesting is how the offering arose in the first place. And that’s all thanks to the app’s owner Elon Musk who soon realized that he was one of the most blocked individuals out there today on the app.

It is certainly speculation and we’re not quite sure about how things went down but one thing is for sure. Musk keeps hinting at how long block lists exist and it’s getting troublesome to work around that. He’s been a huge advocate to rid blocking as he thinks there are many ways to ward barriers and read posts through different accounts anyway.

Seeing the latest explanation made by X, they explained how the block is used for sharing and disguising any information. This could be useful or harmful, it might be private or public. For this reason, X is rolling out a new update that works to provide more transparency.

Hence, if a user blocks you, spreads misinformation about you, and then shares your private data, you will be notified. Similarly, you can see it and even report it, better privacy in general.

It certainly goes against all the laws of blocking seen elsewhere but what more can you expect from someone like Elon Musk who likes to do things a little differently than others. See if someone is causing you trouble on social media, you block and move one. But that’s not the case here.

To sum it up, X says the idea behind removing blocking is that blocked users have access to public posts through different accounts. Similarly, blocked users can see and report abuse by those who blocked it. Thirdly, you always have the option to limit post visibility by turning your Protected Posts feature on. This means only followers will bear witness to it.

It’s interesting because as per rules on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store, all social media platforms need to provide blocking options. So X moving ahead with this option to remove blocking is going to be worth a watch.

So what’s the benefit for X for doing so, if you might ask? The answer is that the app can display more content to users and can highlight a larger number of posts from those who get blocked frequently. The same goes for Musk’s own posts as he’s very keen on letting the masses see all of his updates.

We would not be surprised if we found out that Elon Musk was doing this just to bring up his own stats. As per experts, the move is not a great one, and app stores should unite in rejecting it. For now, X is sticking to its words but the question is until how long.
