TikTok just shared a list of its EU audience and figures for staffing as the latest DSA disclosure. This report also included some interesting points regarding moderation, the growth of users, and others in this region.
As per the latest report that covers the time from January to June of 2024, this is the first time that the social media giant is reporting six months. We’ve seen similar reports in the past that cover a month or perhaps three months in a year but never more than that.
This new update gives the world a better outlook of how the app is performing including the number of active users in this part of the world.
For starters, the app reported removing 22M content in this period and most of the reasons were linked to sensitive or mature themes. Meanwhile, the second biggest contributor to the removal of content was regulated goods and any commercial activities. Thirdly, content that impacted users’ mental health was also another contributor as seen in the report.
As per trends seen in the past, the figures for content removal were less than before which is great news for the platform. The last three-month removal showed 4.3M removals every month while this time around, it’s just restricted to 3.7M.
Does this mean the company adopted a change in the approach to tackling such matters, well, we cannot say for sure. The app is certainly rising in popularity and usage with time. But as a whole, the figures were a reduction and it’s a feature to look out for.
As far as illegal content is concerned, TikTok noticed most user reports were related to Illegal Hate Speech with a lot of privacy violations. Then there was the non-consensual sharing of intimate images that again raised concerns. During this period, the app also banned nearly 5.3M accounts.
As far as moderation is concerned, the app reported having close to over 6000 people linked to content moderation across the EU. That’s a rise of 67 moderators on the latest report which entails a rise of 162 moderators. So with time, TikTok is raising figures for staff moderation to remove elements that it feels are concerning on this app.
Last but not least, the figures for EU users were similarly disclosed on the platform. They include 150M monthly users who are actively using TikTok in Europe today. That’s great news and a mega milestone as it’s an 8M rise from the previous report. Clearly, the app is doing wonders in Europe as more and more people continue to download and use the platform.
As far as which nations lead in terms of app usage, it’s Germany, Spain, Italy, and France. Each nation has more than 20 Million users. As a whole, these combine to make a significant chunk of the app’s billion audience.
