Instagram boss Adam Mosseri has just confirmed a new and useful feature for the Threads app. This will allow users to see when someone is online, confirming their activity status.
The feature was announced today in a new post through the Threads app where he says that the entire purpose was to help others engage in real time. The great news is that if you don’t wish to be bothered at odd times, you can switch this off by changing settings.
Threads is undoubtedly Meta’s answer to arch-rival platform X and with these new offerings, we can see how the company is working hard to come head-to-head with X in terms of offering real-time news and trends. It’s just simpler to look for reactions in real time and replies to live events. This could be a fashion show, earthquake, weather change, and more. Thanks to the latest feature, the app wants to boost user activity in real-time.
We can also see the launch of this new and useful feature as the app’s reply to limited Directed Messages. See, on X, all you need to do to begin chats is roll out a message. But on Threads, that’s not the case. Users cannot even send a Direct Message through the Threads app so it was a little frustrating for some.
The tech giant is searching for ways to better conduct conversations on the app. So as per Mosseri, the more you know about a user being online at a similar time as you, the greater the chances for interactions or conversations taking place.
Still, we do feel a lot of users might not like the sound of that. They would much rather use social media discreetly and in peace as opposed to chatting with someone at odd times. Most of these features are usually seen on texting apps like Discord and FB Messenger and not like X.
When we look at user interactions with Mosseri’s post regarding this new feature, we can tell that not a lot of people actually look forward to such features. Some would much rather stick to DMs because it does not make sense when you don’t have the option to direct message them. Who knows, this might pave the way for DMs on Threads soon.
Others noted that it’s not a great feature in terms of user safety. Trolls harassing users might start to harass them more, provided they’re aware of when that person is online or active through the app.
Whatever the case may be, the feature is launching today so we’re hoping to see more feedback from users come soon. Mosseri failed to demonstrate how the feature can be turned off but we’re sure that navigating through the settings will do the trick.
