Super Fine of 2 Undecillion Rubles 😱: Russia Penalizes Google Over YouTube Ban on TV Channels

A judge in Moscow just fined Google for blocking Russian TV YouTube accounts. The figure was outlined as 2 undecillion rubles. In case you’re wondering, the number of zeros is so much that even a mathematician would have trouble deciphering it.

The court case featured more than 12 national television stations which are in control of the state. As per the details outlined in the legal case, it was shocking to see how they were all linked to the company’s own accounts across the YouTube app.

Therefore, 17 of those channels decided to challenge Google and head to the courts as mentioned by Russian national media outlet RBC. One of the judges who heard the case spoke about the company receiving a fine worth 2 undecillion rubles.

The massive figure features 36 zeros behind the number one and that makes it equal to a lot of US dollars. The court further shared insights on the decision, adding how the fine was imposed because the company did not comply with the national FAS when restoring state media accounts.

Google similarly restricted access to the popular video hosting service in 2020 after Russia invaded Ukraine. The court order for fining Google was done in 2022 when Google refused to restore the accounts. At the time, it was decided that fines featuring 100 thousand rubles per day would be charged for not complying.

This would double each week until decisions were implemented without any limit on the whole amount of this fine.

The case continued since 2022 and it was to such an extent that Google LLC had to declare bankruptcy. Russia is now looking to add more pressure on different nations so it can seize Google’s assets and pay off such fines.

Since then, we’ve seen the Android maker roll out an injunction against the court order to block Russia from starting legal proceedings outside this Federation. Now the figure is huge and how everything plays out in the end, only time can tell. Google should be happy the figure was not a duodecillion but we will check back later in a year if it did reach that point.
