Social media giant Snapchat is silently rolling out its latest Footsteps feature.
The offering will be up for grabs to all iOS users starting this week. And in case you’re wondering, it was previously limited to just those with Snapchat+ subscriptions but now, the masses will get access to it.
The feature makes use of Snap Map to show users how many areas around the globe they’ve explored while also tracking their location.
The first time you try to use this feature, the first steps will depend on clicks taken from Memories so this way, all past trips will be accounted for. Meanwhile, Snapchat says it refuses to use these Memories after that initial period and instead, all the tracking down after that depends on users’ location data.
The app can only populate this feature if users don’t activate their Ghost Mode setting. This stops the apps from displaying location to pals on the app.
The news about the latest launch comes at a time when the popular platform is trying to compete with other archrivals in the industry such as TikTok and Instagram. Through this Snap Map product, the firm hopes to strengthen some key differences from rivals in the industry. And both of these offer nothing of the sort, so far. Who knows, things might change soon after the launch.
Remember, Instagram did hint at the rollout of a Friends Map offering that is currently in the development phase.
Thanks to this latest feature by Snapchat, the Map can tell how many nations the user has set foot into and how much area has been explored in their lifetime journey. Let’s say you go to Greece during the winter break, the app will show you just how much of the country you managed to explore.
Snap Map’s percentages will depend on the various locations where the images were taken and snaps were stored. It’s also worth mentioning that these percentages will be accurate if users are active on the app and are saving Snaps as that’s where the Memories are present.
Moving one step forward, this Map will make use of data to show the real footsteps that are only visible at first glance. You may wish to switch this off or clear the data by entering your Profile and clicking on the button for Settings. After that, you can scroll down enter Account actions, and click on Map.
Once that is done, you can remove the Save New Footsteps as location updates for the Map feature by toggling it off. Any data taken can then be cleared through the history. Hence as you can see, it’s quite like the offering from Google Maps called Timeline.
This is known for tracking journeys depending on the location history of the user.
The app sees this latest offering as the best means to track journeys and also for sharing adventures with pals using customized stickers that put travel on display. As explained by one spokesperson for the firm, it does hope to roll out the offering to all Android users soon.
