Australian scientists have suggested there may be a connection between high internet speed and obesity. As they mentioned, no internet diet can have more influence than mere dopamine receptors.
The researchers who have found this link between obesity and high-speed internet connection belong to Monash, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Melbourne Universities. Obesity is a major health crisis that has its victims all around the world, even in Australia.
As per the data collected from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Australia ranked 10th in the position for having the most obese people above the age of 15 among 21 countries in 2022 mentioned in OECD.
To further shed light on the obesity issue in Australia, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare mentioned that 66% of Australian adults over the age of 18 were overweight.
Meanwhile, the National Broadband Network gradually started providing a speed of 25 Mbps as minimum and 1000 Mbps as maximum. This internet speed is a significant improvement over the current fiber connections, and as per the researchers, it also makes a good case for internet speed and obesity. Then the researchers made a comparison of the data to household, income and labor dynamic survey to Australian citizens to see how internet speed adoption is related to obesity rates.
The survey kept a record of Australian citizens by keeping track of their health, income and employment and gathered the data from 2006 all the way to 2019. The results showed that as the internet speed increased, the increase in obesity also grew in those areas.
Later the research paper published in ScienceDirect mentioned that an increase of only 1% in NBN adoption rate can cause a 1.57% body mass index increase, and it is most likely to happen among men and young adults.
