New Survey Shows 2 in 3 Individuals have Experienced Online Hate Speech

According to a survey of 8,000 individuals from 16 countries by Ipsos, 2 in 3 people have experienced hate speech online. Out of all the countries which were surveyed, India was the top country with most hate speech experienced by individuals (85%), followed by Bangladesh (84%). 79% of respondents from South Africa have experienced hate speech online.

The experience of hate speech was comparatively low in the USA, with 18% reporting seeing hate speech online often and 37% encountering it personally. The online hate speech included violent and abusive language in the comments, articles or messages targeting ethnic or religious groups or making comments about different genders.

Most of the individuals experienced hate speech on Facebook (58%), followed by TikTok (30%). 18% and 15% people also reported experiencing hate speech on X and Instagram respectively. 41% of the respondents said that they encounter hate speech online very often.

Ipsos also asked respondents for solutions to stop online hate speech. Most of the respondents suggested that the government and regulators should make social media safe for everyone. 75% also said the United Nations should take matters into their own hands to make the social media space safe and secure for everyone. Nine in ten also said governments should take measures to eliminate fake news from social media.
